Functions and Everyday Situations

A little background

  • In case you are trying the MARS MAP Classroom Challenges for the first time, it is recommended that you read the Brief Guide for teachers and administrators before you get started.
  • Before the lesson, students work individually on an assessment task that is designed to reveal their current understanding and difficulties. You then review their solutions and create questions for students to consider that may help them improve their work.
  • During the lesson, small groups work on a collaborative task, matching situations, sketch graphs, and algebraic functions. They also refine the graphs and interpret the formulas to answer questions.
  • In a whole-class discussion, students discuss what has been learned and the strategies used.
  • Additional resources for this lesson include: functions_&_sitautions_slides.ppt

Objectives

  • To help you assess how well students are able to articulate verbally the relationships between variables arising in everyday contexts.
  • To help you assess how well students are able to translate between everyday situations and sketch graphs of relationships between variables.
  • To help you assess how well students are able to interpret algebraic functions in terms of the contexts in which they arise.
  • To help you assess how well students are able to reflect on the domains of everyday functions and in particular whether they should be discrete or continuous.
